Comments:
**Be careful with Martin who has pulled his groin in spring training and will likley miss the start of the season. A groin injury is a terrible thing for a catcher and will also affect his hitting. I don’t think anyone can spend too much time debating the top three among the catchers this season, however it surely is up to debate just how valuable they are. Joe Mauer showed incredible pop in his bat last season and a repeat of that power surge is surely not a guarantee. Victor Martinez slowed greatly the second half of
the season and figuring our just how much separation exists between these guys and the rest of the pack could be the most difficult task come fantasy draft day 2010. The emergence of Matt Wieters is about to happen, Wieters hit over .300 AVG in his final 65 games with a .765 OPS, thus the high ranking from me. I really wish Ryan Doumit would get a chance to hit on another team, but even if he sticks with the Pirates all season, his power bad should land him safely in the top ten among his peers. Kurt Suzuki is a player that could be ranked higher than I have him, but just one solid season and very little power makes me very scared to have him as my starting catcher in many leagues. He makes a nice fall back option and should post solid enough numbers for many people to consider him as high as the top six, but not me…I like the power! The Tigers should give Alex Avila a chance to be the every day guy coming out of spring training. Gerald Laird was terrible after the all-star break hitting just .205 with no power. Jesus Flores is my under the radar, buy low, catcher for this season. I expect him to do surprisingly well and be a nice late round roster filler for those that chose to wait until the last minute to draft a catcher.
